What is Par 68 Golf?

While directing Nike Golf Camps I had one of my counselors playing from the “junior tees” with the young students. I told him that he had to play every tee shot to 100 yards and then had to score from there. When he was done with the round he had shot a 68.

Why?…because he was able to set up every approach shot to hit his perfect full wedge into the green.

By looking at the PGA Tour players, who are the most skilled golfers in the world, we can get some insight as to how and where they score.

PGA Tour Scoring Averages
Par 3’s 3.06
Par 4’s 4.03
Par 5’s 4.61

Why is the Tour Average way under par on the Par 5’s but over par on the par 3’s and par 4’s?

The pros play the par 5’s intentionally to score. After weighing out the risk vs rewards of trying to get there in 2 strokes (oftentimes they can get there in 2 stroke) which sets them up for an eagle putt or a “should be easy” birdie putt. If they don’t reach it in 2 strokes, they can get near the greens. They are very skilled in short game shots around the green and can get up and down more than 50% of the time (scrambling 58.52%) securing a birdie. The other option if they don’t think the reward for going at the green in 2, is to set themselves up for a specific distance in with a wedge. They have dialed in specific distances for these type of approach shots and can hit it close which sets up a great birdie putt opportunity. The tour average for approach shots from inside of 100 yards is 17’5”.

As time passed I kept developing the idea that if scratch golfers could just learn to make 14 pars (all the par 4 and par 3 holes) and set themselves up for the perfect approach shot on the par 5’s then they could, in essence, change par to 68.

However, it’s not easy. A golfer MUST develop certain skills and game management philosophies in order to set up each hole to either score on or at least make no worse than par…no matter what.

What are those skills and philosophies?

  • Developing unparalleled short games skills in order to “save par” from anywhere.
  • Managing Risk vs. Reward from tee to green for each shot.
  • Learning how to look at a hole for the first time and dissect how to maneuver around the obstacles.
  • Self-discipline to execute your game plan to keep from having those dreaded “blow-up” holes.
  • Learn how to use YOUR skills to score without having to go through major swing changes

Par 68 Golf is not just for scratch golfers either. Anyone can benefit from the philosophies and skills training offered in my Par 68 Golf programs.
